Mockup many times, measure too many times and cut once !
Even though I am a bit behind the master plan, I have the Tank (large heavy roadster) looking like it is further along that it is. I am a big supporter of mocking up (assembling temporarily) as much as you can, for two big reasons.
(1) You need to keep the spirits up, nothing is quite as challenging as a pile of parts that looks nothing
like the dream ride you are working so hard to craft.
(2) You never know what piece will affect another piece and there are far too many stories of fully finished sub assemblies not fitting together at a point in the process that requires serious rework.
Even though the Buick V6 will be the first engine to run in the Tank, the Mercedes 6.3 will without a doubt be the largest (it's bigger than a Hemi) so setting the radiator shell position, motor mounts and the trans mount was a step before the V6 gets fitted. Because I am planning to use the orininal 32 Ford K member (upside down and narrowed) I was hesitant to guesstimate the cut, so I made a copy of it out of Foam Core Board ( ) not cheap but less hassle than welding pieces back on to a 80 year old piece of steel and I cut that down first.
